Classics of Belarusian Demography
A Belarusian and Soviet geographer; author of numerous scientific papers on socio-economic and demographic development of Belarusian cities. He was engaged in studying the issues of resettlement and urbanization of the Belarusian SSR. He was born in the city of Novosibirsk (RSFSR), but later moved to live in Minsk. Polsky graduated from the Belarusian State University in 1954. In 1973 he started his work in the Minsk State Pedagogical Institute. In 1980 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Geography, and in 1983 he became a Professor. He was the head of the editorial board and the team of authors of the atlas “Belarusians: Ethnography, Demography, Diaspora, Religions” (1996).
A Belarusian and Soviet scientist-economist, demographer, sociologist, Doctor of Economics, Professor. He was awarded with the Diploma of the Supreme Council of the BSSR. He made a significant contribution to the development of the Belarusian demographic science and demographic scientific school. He developed a methodology for calculating labour force balance in towns and administrative districts, proposed a socio-demographic justification that allowed to accelerate the design of the Minsk Metro by several years. In the last years of his life, he worked on human capital development, demographic policy, demographic transformations in population reproduction and migration, demographic consequences of the Chernobyl NPP accident, issues of demographic security, population quality, etc.
A Belarusian and Soviet demographer, economist, sociologist and geographer, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Doctor of Sociology, Professor. She was born on 15 July 1940 in Rzhev (RSFSR). In 1962 she graduated from the Faculty of Geography of the Belarusian State University. From 1962 to 1981 she worked as a Senior Researcher at the Scientific and Research Institute of Economics, Economic and Mathematical Methods of Planning under the State Planning Committee of the BSSR. In 1972 she defended her thesis on the topic: “Socio-economic study of the birth rate of the Belarusian SSR” and was awarded the degree Candidate of Economic Sciences with specialization in Statistics 08.600. In 1975 she was awarded the title of Senior Research Fellow with specialization in population economics and demography.
A Belarusian geographer, specialist in population geography, demography and economic geography. A scientist who for the first time in Belarus defended her Ph.D. thesis in the field of population geography on “Regional aspects of population problems (based on materials for Vitebsk region)”. Founder and scientific director of the Student Scientific and Research Laboratory for Regional Demographic Problems from 1985 until 1998. The author of the first in the BSSR textbook on population geography “Population of Belarus: regional characteristics of development and resettlement” (1992). Initiator and founder of the only specialization in the country “Demography” with specialty 1 31 02-01 “Geography” at the Belarusian State University.
